Tom Lawrence is the prize winning composer, sound recordist and acoustic ecologist behind
multi-award winning and multi-nominated films and TV series' (please see credits for a recent list). He is
also the recipient of the Adele Mellen Prize for 'outstanding work' (Edwin Mellen Press July 2008). Tom
has worked with directors for BBC, RTE, TG4, TV3, The History Channel and independent media such as
Sarah Blunt (BBC Radio 4), Peter Carr (RTE), Brendan Culleton (Akajava Films), Martin Danneels (Red
Pepper Productions), Bafta winning director Tim Fernée (Moving Still Productions), Deffie Award winner
and IFTA nominated Simon Gibney (RTE), Irina Maldea (Akajava Films), IFTA nominated best director
Paul Mercier (Solas Films, TG4), James Phelan (Great Western Films), Ross O' Callahan & Aileen
MacDonagh (Peer Pressure), Paul O'Flanagan (Boulder Media), Paul Stevenson (RTE), Marie Toft (RTE)
etc. on a range of music scores and sound design for film, television and new media. Tom Lawrence is

After leaving University College Cork with a B.A. Degree, Tom went on to complete an M.A. Music
Performance with Gerard Gillen at NUI, Maynooth. He studied Jazz guitar with Liam Foley and classical
guitar with both John Feeley (Dublin Conservatoire of Music) and Maria Levia San Marcus (Geneva
Conservatoire of Music). He also studied composition and orchestration with composer Stephen
Lawrence Parker.
Tom completed a Ph.D in Musicology with Harry White at University College Dublin. He has also
completed several film scoring and film sound programmes including Diploma Film Music Composition
(Film Institute, Los Angeles), Screen Training Ireland; Orchestration for Film & Television Composers
(with Conrad Pope), sound recording with Chris Watson (www.chriswatson.net) and Filmbase's Sound
production for Film (Noel Quinn). Tom also holds an L.T.C.L. (Music Performance, Trinity College,
London).
He has performed as a solo guitarist and in ensembles in Europe and Ireland, and is prolific as
conductor and music director.
Tom chairs the MSc Multimedia program at the School of Communications, Dublin City University where
he is a lecturer in communications.
Tom Lawrence is an external examiner for Dundalk Institute of Technology (Creative Media), Dublin
Institute of Technology (Music Performance), National University of Ireland, Maynooth (Multimedia), and
University College Cork (Law Dept.). He is a full member of IMRO/MCPS, The Society for Musicology in
Ireland (SMI), The Acoustic Ecology Institute and The Wildlife Sound Recording Society.
